Weather Awareness & Safety
Before you head out, take a minute to check the weather forecast. Thunderstorms and sailboats don’t mix! If storms are possible but you still decide to sail, keep an eye on the sky and listen to your VHF radio for updates. A smart sailor comes in at least 30 minutes before the weather turns. Skippers should always bring a handheld VHF radio and tune in to the weather channel. Make sure your crew knows what’s going on, too. If you’re out for a while or storms are in the forecast, check for updates regularly — conditions can change fast on the water.
